There are numerous ways to get involved with CIIFAD, ranging from donating
to CIIFAD itself to getting assistance in convening colleagues at Cornell
or global partners to develop multidisciplinary project proposals. In addition
to developing new projects, there are opportunities to interact with a CIIFAD-sponsored
thematic group, join a topical discussion forum, give or attend a seminar,
locate colleagues at Cornell in a specific field, or to join an on-going or
emerging CIIFAD-sponsored project. (See also Related
International Resources at Cornell for international courses and degree
programs, student resources and related international programs, centers and
networks at Cornell).
CIIFAD sponsors and participates in thematic
working groups at Cornell as
well as transnational communities of practices and numerous virtual
discussion groups. Students, faculty and staff interested finding out more
about contributing to the Cornell-based CIIFAD-supported interest groups can
contact the group coordinators noted
on the thematic groups page.
Of significant importance to CIIFAD's knowledge generation and sharing agenda
is its role in convening geographically diverse groups and individuals through
virtual on-line communities. These thematic communities of practice, which
are connected through a series CIIFAD-maintained listservs and websites, work
on regional and global solutions to both research and practical problems. Currently,
CIIFAD facilitates the following on-line communities:
These global virtual discussion groups
are also open to those not connected with CIIFAD or Cornell.
CIIFAD sponsors a weekly international
seminar series (Agroecological Perspectives for Sustainable Development)
during the academic year and co-sponsors occasional seminars together with
various Cornell departments and centers on campus. These seminars, which
are free and open to the Cornell community and the general public, can also
be taken for 1 credit per semester. If you would like to give a seminar on
your development work, contact CIIFAD. Find
out about upcoming CIIFAD-sponsored events in the website's news
section.
The Professional
Development Unit of the IP/CALS works with CIIFAD to arrange international
short courses and trainings at the request of overseas partners or CIIFAD-sponsored
thematic communities and collaborative programs.
CIIFAD can help locate faculty, staff and
graduate students working on specfic
issues in food, agriculture and international development at Cornell University.
To locate CALS international faculty, see the list of international

CIIFAD facilitates and participates in the development and implementation
of multidisciplinary, projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America that include
faculty and students at Cornell as well as collaborators in various governmental
and non-governmental organizations and institutions worldwide. CIIFAD can provide
administrative support for convening faculty, students and non-Cornell partners
to develop proposals and implement interdisciplinary or
transnational projects with research or development components. (See also CIIFAD's on-going
programs). Non-Cornell groups can also inquire about partnering
with CIIFAD on international collaborative efforts.
Over the past 15 years, more than 200 graduate students have received support
for their studies or field research in connection with CIIFAD programs. Research
focuses are determined jointly with overseas partners so that there is a demand
for what is learned. CIIFAD's small support staff assists its interdisciplinary,
collaborative programs with publications, seminars, travel, and other arrangements.
Small amounts of financial support for graduate students
to travel and undertake overseas projects are available. CIIFAD staff
and partners can also assist students associated with CIIFAD's ongoing collaborative
initiatives to
locate supporting funds from a variety of sources. Graduate students may also
inquire about initiating new transnational or multidisciplinary overseas initiatives
with Cornell faculty or non-Cornell partners.
CIIFAD also assists both undergraduate
and graduate students at Cornell in locating and linking with faculty, staff
and students with specific geographical or topical interests. Students may
inquire about participating in CIIFAD-sponsored seminars, thematic
working groups or virtual communities of practice.
