"Heal Kenya" fundraising campaign for Kenyan humanitarian crisis
The disputed outcome of a December 27, 2007 presidential election in Kenya sparked violence and a humanitarian crisis. Over 1000 individuals have been killed and more than 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes – many permanently. The extent of injuries and loss of property is yet to be estimated. Along with the Kenya government agencies, several organizations including the Kenya Red Cross Society, UN World Food Program, churches and NGOs are on the ground working to provide relief services to the many internally displaced persons (IDPs) but need support to accomplish this task.
Members of the Kenyan family at Cornell through the Wananchi ("Citizens") Association, a Kenyan and East African students group are organizing a "Heal Kenya Campaign" that will include 3 components:
- a month-long fund drive which kicks off on February 27, 2008, to create awareness about this need and raise funds
-- All funds raised will be sent through the Cornell Institute of African Development to the Kenya Red Cross Society. Donations should be payable to the “Cornell University” and designated “Heal Kenya” in the memo field of the check.
-- Donations maybe to dropped off at the following places around the Cornell campus:
(a) CIIFAD (31Warren Hall) – leave with Ginny Montopoli
(b) IAD (170 Uris Hall) – at front desk
(c) Africana (310 Triphammer Rd) – at front desk
(d) ISSO (B-50 Caldwell Hall) – at front desk - a forum in partnership with the New York African Studies Association (NYASA) that will discuss the underlying causes of the current crisis in Kenya (March 28, 2008). Contact Daniel Lumonya for more information.
